Chemical Cargo Ship Sinks Off Sri Lanka Coast

A cargo ship filled with tonnes of toxic chemicals is sinking off the coast of Sri Lanka in what the government is calling one of the country’s worst-ever marine disasters. It took 12 days to extinguish the ship’s fire, allowing scores of dangerous chemicals to spill into the country’s water and onto its beaches.

The Sri Lankan government has banned fishing along 80 km of its coastline, affecting thousands of fishing boats. Soldiers have also been deployed to clean local beaches.
