Actor and playwright Heidi Schreck uses the Broadway stage to show how the Constitution fails to protect all Americans.
“When I was a teenager, I would travel the country giving speeches about the Constitution at American Legion halls for scholarship money,” she explained. “That is the inspiration for the play, revisiting this 30-year-old contest and seeing what I can learn about my own life through the document.”
Schreck also said she has a history of domestic violence in her family, and she came to a conclusion during the play that this kind of violence has probably touched all of us, and how desperate people are to come together and talk about it.
Her play called, What the Constitution Means to Me” delves into the good, bad, and ugly of the document.
“Many of us are sort of living in the shadows of this document,” she said. “You know, we have a different understanding of gender, too, than we had when this Constitution was written. And there are a lot of people, trans folks, non-binary folks, folks that don’t necessarily identify a certain way who are left unprotected by this.”
The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said that the Constitution does not prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. Schreck highlights the real world consequences of this lack of protection.
