This mental health advocate is leading a movement to help girls overcome depression and self-doubt.

Achea Redd created Real Girls F.A.R.T.—which stands for Fearless, Authentic, Rescuer, Trailblazer—to help girls overcome depression and boost self-expression.
Redd is a mental health advocate who, through speaking events, uses the acronym as a tool to help girls overcome anxiety and boost self-love. During the summer of 2019, Redd will release her book “Be Free. Be You.,” which offers insight on how to live authentically.
“My message to young women today and forever is to one, know you’re not alone. Two, let it out. No pun intended,” she stated.
Redd says as a Black woman, she often found herself in a “shameful space.” With a pastor for a dad, she was held to high expectations. She later married former NBA star Michael Redd and recalls more high expectations that came with the new exposure.
“I had to just line up with all of these new expectations of the best handbag, the best clothing, the best shoes and, you know, look like I come out of the magazine every day,” she explained.
In 2016, Redd was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and depression. She began blogging to cope with her struggles. She then created the Real Girls F.A.R.T. movement to provide girls access to mental health resources.
Ultimately, she hopes girls celebrate their confidence by becoming Fearless, Authentic, Rescuer, Trailblazers.
