BIDEN’S HISTORIC PICKS FOR TOP ECONOMIC ADVISERS: President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are formally announcing their choices for their administration’s top economic positions—ones that will play a major role in navigating the country through an economic crisis. The names were released yesterday, which included women serving in four top roles.
Among the choices are former Chair of the Federal Reserve Janet Yellen, who will be nominated for Treasury Secretary; CEO and president of the Center for American Progress Neera Tanden, who will be nominated to run the Office of Management and Budget; Princeton economist Cecilia Rouse, who will lead the Council of Economic Advisers; and former member of the National Economic Council under Pres. Obama Adewale ‘Wally’ Adeyemo, who will be nominated for deputy Treasury Secretary. If confirmed, Tanden and Rouse will be the first women of color and Adeyemo will be the first Black man in their respective roles. Biden also tapped former economic adviser to Pres. Obama Jared Bernstein and CEO of the Washington Center for Equitable Growth Heather Boushey to serve on the Council of Economic Advisers.
‘As we get to work to control the virus, this is the team that will deliver immediate economic relief for the American people during this economic crisis and help us build our economy back better than ever,’ Biden said in a statement yesterday. ‘This team is comprised of respected and tested groundbreaking public servants who will help the communities hardest hit by COVID-19 and address the structural inequities in our economy.’
