BIDEN SPEAKS ON REBUILDING THE ECONOMY AS COVID-19 SURGES: President-elect Joe Biden and VP-elect Kamala Harris are delivering remarks about rebuilding the U.S. economy amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Moments ago, the two spoke with various business and union leaders to discuss the long journey ahead towards economic recovery. As over 50 million Americans have filed for unemployment since March, the country is reporting a roughly 7% unemployment rate, and a new wave of infections spreading across the country is sparking fears of new shutdowns. ‘To state the obvious, we seem to be turning a pretty dark corner now,’ Biden said at the briefing, according to a pool report. He added that though there are different views on how to best receive the economy, ‘we all agree on the common goals, just have a slightly different perspective.’ There were more than 1 million new cases in the U.S. last week alone, and cases are rising in 48 states. With Pres. Trump refusing to concede after losing the election, there has been no meeting between his administration and Biden’s transition team on how to control the outbreaks, protect the economy, and administer a potential vaccine. Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown’s school of public health, has warned that a failure of Trump to coordinate with the incoming administration could cost tens of thousands of lives.
