Senate Debates Increased Coronavirus Relief Checks | LIVE | NowThis

BERNIE FILIBUSTERS TO PASS $2,000 STIMULUS CHECKS: The Senate reconvenes to further debate the standalone bill to increase the relief checks sent to eligible Americans from $600 to $2,000. The bill was passed with bipartisan support in the House of Representatives and sent to the Senate on Tuesday, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell never scheduled a vote. McConnell also blocked an effort by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to hold an immediate vote and pass the bill by unanimous consent. Sen. Bernie Sanders, along with Sens. Ed Markey and Sherrod Brown, have said that they would filibuster to block any vote on the defense bill override—that also passed the House on Monday—unless the Senate first votes on the relief checks. Whether McConnell retains control of the Senate for the next two years will be determined by the result of Georgia’s January 5 runoff elections.
